Peter Molyneux: “Fable 3 was fractured” “I’d never exclude any type of game”

Firstly, I'd like to make a mention of congratulations to Peter Molyneux for picking up the Lifetime Achievement Award from those lovely people at BAFTA, he fully deserved it. Peter has changed the way the industry makes games and make us UK gamers even more proud to be British. Oh, and we love chickens too.

We grabbed a word with the 'King of Gaming' himself at this year's BAFTAs:

XG24/7 (Sam Clay): Hey Peter, firstly, it's great to speak to you this evening and congratulations on the award! Its well deserved. I'll let you into a little secret, I was only just playing Dungeon Keeper 1 month ago!

Peter Molyneux: Really? I loved making Dungeon Keeper, there was a story on the video [Peter's BAFTA announcement] about me taking the Team to my house to finish making it, we had a lot of fun!

XG24/7: You told us at Gamescom that Fable 2 had its flaws and wasn't exactly the product you wanted to make. What do you think of Fable 3?

PM: Well, sadly, I have to be honest with you, and you may think I'm just being humble again but lets be empirically critical about it. I don't think that the technology was really up to it, especially from what I've just seen [Talking about winners of the night], I think there were too many cuts in the game and I think we do need to have a re-think about some of our ideas to keep people on their toes.

So, the team worked amazingly hard but I think we've got to realize that other games out there are doing amazingly good as well.

XG24/7: With your lifetime achievement, it obviously includes your previous games, can you see yourself going back to them?

PM: I love all games, I love working on them and playing on them. I hope that, to prove I'm worthy of an award like this, I wouldn't exclude any sort of game, from social to handheld to mobile. To anything really, I wouldn't want to exclude anything, there is an appeal and 'freshness' to a sort of kind of games at the moment.

XG24/7: What games are you excited by?

PM: You know, It's really strange, I love the big opposes. I loved Black Ops, I was really shocked that Red Dead Redemption wasn't in a lot more categories tonight, but for me, the real surprises were the more independent games. I was bowled away by Minecraft, I loved the simplistic style of Limbo and the cuteness of Desktop Dungeons was also great. Those were the real surprises for me.

XG24/7: Late last year, we got a new star on the internet, which was your son, did he get a reply from Valve?

PM: Not to my knowledge, those cruel bastards!.

XG24/7: Is he still wanting to play Half Life 3?

PM: Well, he still wants to play Half Life 3, Portal 2 is out next month but, I'm afraid that Minecraft as caught him, he's no longer playing steam games anymore, he's now on Minecraft!

XG24/7: Well its a pleasure to speak to you as ever! And I owe you a beer!

PM: You do? Was it a bet?

XG24/7: No, just I owe you one generally!

PM: Thank you very much!

and to confirm, Peter got the beer!
